Why are transmission builders so reluctant towards shift kits? It seems the transmission builders either want to set up with a stock transmission or go straight to a manual valve body.

I usually find out the intended use and build the transmission to fill the need.

I've used plenty of Trans-Go TF-2's over the years for myself and others but never could get the 2-3 shift where I wanted it.

My latest build for my own ride is a Turbo Action Cheetah full FWD pattern manual Valvebody.

It's not a racecar just a driver. Might have to bite the bullet and take a chance.

Frank, I have a reverse manual valve body in my 69 Bee streetcar and love it. It is way more fun to drive that a full automatic. I also have a Gear Venders in it. I bypassed the GV controller and manually select over drive. It’s like having a four speed.

Cost. A good TF-2 kit is around $80 for the kit, and takes at least an hour or more to install, so the customer would be looking at close to $200+ to just install a shift kit. A manual VB is not much more expensive and operates at high pressure.
It really depends on the application and the customer. A guy building a trans for racing only usually wants the reverse manual VB, and the guy looking for a low budget rebuild won't want to spend the $$$ to have the valve body built.
It usually takes a customer who has a hot street car and is willing to spend the extra money to have the transmission built right.
You also want to find a shop that knows performance modifications for Mopar transmissions. Many shops hire guys that just do general rebuilds with no modifications, so they may not know all the tricks and setup of a modified transmission.

One trans guy told me that he couldn't afford the time it takes to get the shift points back near stock!!

There are several good kits available for the 904/727 family that are easy to install and work well. With the adjustable detent linkage and modified governor a builder can dial in nearly any automatic shift point, but as it has been pointed out, it is a time consuming process, but in my opinion the ends justify the means.

A torqueflite is on the hairy edge of overlap/flare STOCK, changing the line pressure, clutch pack clearances and front band apply lever screws it all up and no 2 transmissions will react the same to the same mods. The easy way out is to just put a manual valvebody it in, but if you are going to have to shift the trans you might as well have a manual trans .
