Really there isn`t a "bad" year. Most prefer the 68`--71`s . But I`ve used 66`s and 76`s they all did just fine. Its more important that the block check`s out OK for core shift and cracks etc...

Any 400 block that passes a sonic check has a better life expectancy at higher Hp than a 440 block. About the best stroker combo to work with is a 512 cube motor with 4.25 stroke and 4.375 bore. That is a practical limit in the 400 block. Guys have built them bigger, but For a good long life shortblock the 512 is hard to beat. It will also handle up to 850 hp with 440-1 heads, and more with B1 heads. If you plan on SERIOUS power (850 or more) a center counter weighted crank will help take a lot of stress out of the bottom end and extend the life of the motor.
