... that would be safer (less aggressive) for doing some combustion chamber re-shaping / blending? If not, how about a suggestion for a carbide-bit style good for this type of work? Thanks.

imho for that i would use emery rolls or other type of abrasive (craytex). stones will fill and aluminum burrs will remove material too fast unless you're really looking to reshape something

No stones... they load up way to quick... you can
use toosie rolls with some stiff grit if you dont
want to use the cutting bits

Unfortunately, I don't do porting work on a regular enough basis to have a good feel for what to expect any more. I'll have to experiment on an old head to see if I can get the contour I'm looking for consistently using sanding rolls.

I may also try a small fine-cut, egg-shaped, carbide to see if I can get the same results w/o cutting away too much too quickly, which is my big concern.

I only use the alum carbide cutters if I want to remove
a good bit of material... I also have a support bearing
on my longer burrs so they dont fly around the port
if they bite too hard... with all the different grits
on the tootsie rolls you can hog or fine tune it to
be as aggressive as you want... I pick up boxes of
tootsie rolls in assorted grits from the local abrasive
company for alot less money.... I probably have 6-8
boxes of different grits and diameters right now

Good tip I found hear once was to keep spraying your carbide burr with WD40 really keeps bite clean and 1/8th the mess of using oils!

If your going to reshape the chamber to unshroud the intake and maybe the exhaust lay the head gaskets you going to use on head and mark inside them you don't want to end up with the fire ring hanging inside the chamber!

I used the heavy alum. egg shaped cutters where I was removing the most material like the p-rod pinch, roof, walls and lightly in the bowls then followed up w/the tootsie rolls for the final shape and finish. I would lay your head gasket on the heads and base my work/shaping on that as my guide. Just some personal opinions from a "hack"............

I'm not sure if my response should be "It takes one to know one" or "I've got no room to talk."

The best thing I can say about my own porting is that at least nothing I've ever ported (so far) has ever SLOWED DOWN after I worked on it.

Either way...........good luck on those. I really enjoy porting heads and in my case they seem to have helped my et`s picking up almost two tenths and 3+ mph.

Here is something to consider...American Vermont rotary files in a cordless drill will let you buzz material at your pace and they dont clog up and will not run away on you.

You will feel it in your arms the next day as you with pressure decide how much and what material comes out the use rolls to finish.

So if you got a good amount of work to do, its easy to feel confortable using them vs a carbide which I olny use on iron heads.

They also sell an 8 inch ext. which I didnt put in the pic.

Good luck either way ya do it.....
