I found a 77 Aspen with a stock 90K+ mile 318 in it that I'm thinking of picking up. Since I'd want a little more performance, I started thinking up a combo for it. I already have a Performer intake and was thinking of going with a small summit cam and lifter combo (SUM-6900) for now. Thing is, I also have a rebuilt roller cam 318 with 302 heads on it in my possesion. I also have another roller cam that I could have reground for it or I do like the Lunati roller cams (either the 60710 or the 60711).

Soooo, my question is, is one 318 better than the other? I'm thinking the roller 318 would be a bit better with the roller cam and the decent 302 heads, but would it be a noticeable difference over the 77 318? Either engine would be getting headers, but I'd probably do the cam first. Oh, and the 360 would come later on.

the roller 318 has the better, smaller chamber 302 heads. the piston's compression height is also about .010" taller than the '77's....it should be very close to a true 9:1, if not a little over if you use the .028" thick head gaskets. I'd run the roller motor with either a bullet regrind or the lunati cams mentioned. for valve springs, I'd use the Hughes #1110 springs.

Hi Brian

I like the 1990-107,000 mile- JY 318/#302 head engine I just stuck the lunati 60710 roller cam in 6 month ago.

I went with the comp 901-16 with the voodoo cam.

my old 85 stepside is fun to drive with that little combo.

the 60710 worked great in a 318 with 360 heads as well, the 360 headed 318 had a little more top end and revs faster.

the #302 headed 318 has a little more low end and will turn right up to 5500 rpm.

IMHO,any 318 after 85 is the better engine. it has a roller cam and more comp ratio with a better comb chamber with the same small valves.

I rather swap a whole engine than do a cam R&R while its in the car.

I don't know enough to comment on camshafts you have mentioned, but regarding the other details, I'd slap on an alum intake, the headers, and bide my time until a 360 shows up.

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

Hi Mike! I think I still need to send you the cam box back from the roller cam, don't I. Oops!

I'll probably drive the car the way it is while I get the roller 318 together (well, cam and intake installed, cleaned and painted, etc.), then swap in the roller motor. The 360 will be a while and I need to have a little power before then.

This is all if I get the car. Just wanted to keep my options open.
