I have a 72 Duster with an 833, I pulled the cover to...(don't ask why) but I can't get the thing back on, any tricks or should I just pull the whole thing down?

If you put the 3-4 shift fork on the cover and get it started you can use a screwdriver (or whatever tool you choose) to raise the 1-2 shift fork into place and then push the cover all the way on. Once you get the 3-4 shift fork in it helps to put a few bolts in to hold the cover.

Patience...

What he said , I've had to do it twice after breaking the 1-2 fork in 2 different cars .

As John indicated if you have it apart now would be a good time to install steel shift forks. If you plan on shifting the trans hard with the bronze shift forks you will be driving home in (my guess is) third gear.

Let me guess...you put the shift levers/tabs on the trans upside down and it wouldn't shift so you took it apart?
