can I use a dual field alt on a pre-70 mechanical regulator system? I don't want to change the harness over to the electronic. I seem to recall reading about just grounding one of the field terminals and all will be well... maybe I am hallucinating...

You are correct....

Though actually what is commonly referred to as a dual field alternator is actually an isolated field alternator & only differs for the earlier design by not having one end of the field winding grounded....

That isn't technically true, the isolated field setup varies the resistance to ground to control the output, the early version switches the 12V to the field on and off to "chop" an output of whatever is needed. The isolated setup is still grounded, but thru the voltage regulator.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

Your talking about what the regulator does, not how the alternator is built...

yes ground the extra field terminal with a short piece of wire to the alt case & can probably remove the insulating washer to ground the brush/brush holder itself for a cleaner appearance

and it doesn't matter which one you ground or hook the field wire up to, just pick one.

cool! I have 14 dual field alts in the collection, and no singles... I will make it work.
