I'm just changing my oil and filter and wondered what method you use to cut your filter for inspection. Tin snips ? grinding wheel ? hacksaw ?
Do you cut it screw thread down, to stop anything falling in or what ?

Filter cutter - designed for the job. A chain style pipe / tubing cutter will work also, but more of a hassle. Anything else and you will contaminate what you are trying to view.

True Cut the paper element apart off of the steel center at both ends and then cut it length wise so you can spread it out and look at the bottom of the folds

Last time I had a issue I just spun the filter off and sure enough you could see the shavings and I poured the filter out and also very sparkly.
