I'm just changing my oil and filter and wondered what method you use to cut your filter for inspection. Tin snips ? grinding wheel ? hacksaw ? Do you cut it screw thread down, to stop anything falling in or what ? Mick

Filter cutter - designed for the job. A chain style pipe / tubing cutter will work also, but more of a hassle. Anything else and you will contaminate what you are trying to view.

in case you slip - have a first aid kit handy - the filter cans are sharp!!

Last time I had a issue I just spun the filter off and sure enough you could see the shavings and I poured the filter out and also very sparkly.
