I am in the final stages of completing the metal work on my '73 to AAR clone. Recently I completed the metal work on the shell and now I have been working on cloning '72 - '74 style fenders into '70 fenders. Last weekend while reviewing my options to get rid of some rust issues I noticed the bracket which the hood bumper mounts to was different between the '70 and the '72 - '74 type fenders. Following is a picture which shows both types of brackets. Is the extra metal on the '70 style used for any attachments?

On the RH side to get rid of some rust I had to weld on the along the seam plus I was able to replace the bucket with a bucket from a '70.

I notice how this pictures shows the beat up part of the firewall. After all the work I have completed I might just have to cut this out and replace it...

On the LH side I was able to break the spot welds and just replace the bracket. I'll have to modify this bucket area plus on both sides I need to make the holes for the lower mounting points for the front valance.

So far I am pleased with the results.

Hi Don,
As far as the 70 piece goes...There's nothing fastened on the lower oval hole you have there...The two upper ones are obviously the header panel but I'm thinking with the added weight of the 70 header the variance was probably a structural move to firm up that area of the fender...There's alot going on in the corners with the header, fender, and grille attaching points on the 70.. Keep up the good work !!

very interesting!

Are both your doors from the same year car? Here's something I ran into on my car. 1970 has slots for the clips that hold on the window felts (cat whiskars), later years just have holes because they attach with screws. You can use the later ones without issue, but my problem is that one door on my 70 car is from a 71, so now I have to elongate all those holes in that door into slots.

Tav that is very, very interesting! Both the doors I am using are from a '73 (at least I think so however now that you mention it I do recall during media blasting that one was a different color so I an not sure about the year). Regardless I am at the stopping point as far as the cloning part goes. I am going to try to make a push to get'er'done by Jan. 3rd, 2009! This evening I media blasted the front valance and tomorrow the lower valance I purchased on ebay is suppose to arrive. I think that will be my last part to media blast. One thing I have learned is media blasting is a lot more comfortable in the tyvek type suits!
