Trying to work all the bugs out of my newly installed 408. In addition to the charge issue I also have a misfire (pops out the exhaust and breaks up) once the motor gets to approx 5K rpms. I was wondering if I am not getting enough voltage to the orange box if that could be a cause of the misfire?

Working through the weekend so trying to get ideas to start trouble shooting. Timing, fuel pressure under load(I have 9 lbs at the rail per the gauge at idle), igition are all on the list to check but was thinking that the two problems maybe related. Also going to poke around with the volt meter.

Thanks

Once you get down to around 8 volts to the ignition, the Mopar boxes will misfire. It also depends on which coil and distributor you use with it.

I'd check plugs/wires/rotor phasing/timing

Yes it could very easily be because of a faulty charging system not keeping a good charge in the battery. Seen it many times. It doesn't take long for it to show upon the high end. especially if you are running electric accessories like fans and fuel pump.

Is it a newer orange box? It sounds a lot like how my old orange box died. It started missing in the upper RPM range and eventually flat out died.

It's at least 8 years old it has been on the car since I've owned it. I have a spare I will throw it on and see if there is any change. Just waiting for my dual field alternator that maybe part of the issue.

I have seen the stock wiring give guys headaches just like this. Try a separate circuit for the ignition system. Run nothing through the original harness and see what happens. Then try the box, then rotor , plugs, wires. start with a plug gap of .035.
