Anybody know a trick to adjusting the mech advance limit on an MP dist?

Have you got a newer Mallory-built unit or the old style?

I bought it brand new about 2 years ago and it was my understanding that it was built by MSD.

I thought all the MP distributors were either made by Chrysler or Mallory, but I've been wrong before.

If it's a Mallory unit, it's easily adjustable.

If it's a Chrysler unit, you either shorten the slots by welding or with JB Weld, then carefully file them slightly longer, reinstall, test, remove, file, reinstall, test, etc. until you've got the mechanical advance limited to what you want.

I hope that makes sense.

This one has the adjustable baseplate (loosen two screws and turn) so it is really easy to ajust, I was just wondering if any knew an easy way to get it in "range". For example: loosen the screws and position mov the base plate halfway gets you "X" degres.

Here's the kit you need. Overpriced for a few springs and pieces of plastic but it works. You would think they would have just engraved lines on the plate in 2 degree increments.

Mopar Performance should offer that kit. The average guy isn't going to know that the MP distributor can use Mallory YH parts since MP never provides that info in their catalog.

The plastic would make it a lot faster, but you can still get there. I did mine by trial and error. Closing the slots about half way will get you 16-18 degrees initial with 32-34 degrees total.

Yeah, I kinda figured that trial and error was the way to go, I really hate spending $30 on something that I'll probably only use once.

Thanks for the input gang!

Big tip.....Take a FINE tip felt pen and draw a line in each of the two slots where the top plate overlaps the bottom--that way you know what the previous setting was and as you trial and error it you will have a much better idea of each adjustment to make.

It's in the 2007 mp catalog.

Kit contains six different primary springs, three different secondary springs and 2 degree key set, allowing you to adjust timing to your performance needs.

OK so I finally got the chance to tinker with the distributor today (BTW JimG, you were right it is a Mallory not MSD as I had been told). I decided that since it seemed to have 30 degrees of adjustment and I only wanted 20 that I should adjust it to about 2/3rds the distance of the slot.

What can I say, I got lucky and nailed it the first time.

Thanks for the sugestions everyone.

If you don't want to buy the kit just pick up a 39 cent protractor at the stationary store and glue it to an old rotor with the center centered over the main shaft of the distributor. Tape a piece of coat hanger to the housing to use as a pointer. Then just twist the rotor against the advance springs to measure the advance and adjust as necessary.

You want to measure on the protractor 1/2 the number of crank degrees you want, remember the distributor turns at 1/2 the speed of the crank. So if you are looking for 20 degrees of advance in the distributor the protractor should read 10 degrees.

You can do it with a degree wheel also.

In my experience the plastic "gauges" that come in the mallory spring kit don't yeild as much advance as they say..... But the graph provided in the instructions does show curves for the different spring combinations which does seem good.

I don't know what springs I have in mine but I checked it last night and it starts advancing at 1200 and is all over by 1800. I only have about 14 degrees mechanical advance though.

When I set mine up with the Mallory kit the amount of advance was dead on when I checked it after putting the distributor back in.

Also, as you reduce the amount advance in the distributor you need to increase the stiffness of the springs to keep the advance all in at the same rpm. For Example: if you had 30 degrees of timing in the distributor and it was all in at 3000 rpm and you moved the stops to limit the advance to 15 degrees than it would be all in at 1500 rpm. When I did mine I used the orange springs which I believe are the next to stiffest to keep my 18 degrees coming in at 2500 rpm. The distributor came with the lightest pink springs.

Using a degree wheel would be awful inconvenient. They are so large in diameter it would be very hard to see what you are doing and trying accurately attach it to the end of the distributor shaft would be a chore. The protractor would be much easier.
