for nice cruisin ride
Thats still too vague. "Nice cruisin ride" to some means they don't really care about acceleration and want semi-decent MPG, other cruisers occasionally 1/4mile the car---BIG difference. Rear tire diameter comes into play also.
...but more often than not, for a street car, the choices usually boil down to a 3.23 or 3.55, MAYBE a 3.73 if you can find it.

489 housing with a 741/742 clutch style suregrip.
gear ratio depending on use.
Shorty an FYI , 741's made after the 68 model year had cone types just like the 489 .

Exactly what Directsubjection said about Doctor Diff !!!! . . . . but really, you have to look at the gear selection as part of your overall pacakage - your cam (depending on 4speed or auto), your converter (if auto), tire size, and exactly what you want . . . drag racer, cruiser, etc . . .
Seems everyone gets into issues when they figure they can change one part and not have that affect the others . . .
Just my two cents . . .
Cheers

I've used suregrip 3.23 ('68 Road Runner, auto), 3.55 ('73 Road Runner, auto), and 3.91 ('70 Super Bee, 4 speed), and have liked them all for street cars. The 3.91s were a bit steep when I drove it from NE Ohio to Carlisle, but the big L-60-14 Mickey Thompson's helped. If you're going to drive the car alot on the highway and longer trips, I'd go with 3.23's. If you're just driving around town or short trips, then the 3.55's or 3.91's would be fine. Just my opinion. Mine always had the 489 case.

I currently am running a a 489 suregrip case with 3.91 gears and 27" tall tires on my '66 Coronet. At 55mph I am turning 2800 RPM and at 65mph turning 3200. I plan on driving this car to various gatherings and shows around the midwest and want a lower highway cruising RPM along with better MPG so I just recently picked up a 489 open with 3.23's which should get me down to 2150 at 55mph and 2450 at 65mph
Just my
I would toss a set of 2.76's in it for those long drives .
