Run a chain--keep the extra $$ in your jeans--there has almost never been a race won because one had a gear drive---Chains get KILLED by stutter boxes at the dragstrip but otherwise--they are the way to go! Look for a quality chain--the import junk will strech like cooked pasta--the Japan chains are good as well as Aussie--for the $$ the Milodon ( who knows where they get it) is a good set--Todd at marsh Perf ( sponsor here ) has the Aussie units and they are good. A gear drive may have a place on a blown dragger but otherwise no big advantage. If not set up right they are a disadvantage. It is about $$$$$ Keep as much as you can except when buying a helmet and fire suit IMO. FWIW I am an engine builder but I race with junk my clients throw away--like streched chains stc--and I make it do pretty good!!

I’m looking to get some thoughts/comments on Gear Drives (vs) Roller Chains. I’m thinking of a Milodon Gear Drive for my BB. Any experiences bad or good, Pro’s and Con’s for either. Thanks, Bill
The pros are they(gear drives) never vary do to stretching or wear One of the bad things listed about gear drives is they transmit vibration from the crankshaft to the cam that a chain or belt will absorb, not sure that is relevant The list goes on, I have used chains, belts and single idler gear drives but not dual idler I liked them all as far as performance Maybe a little advantage of the belt drives over the chains and maybe a little advantage to the gear drives over the chains, maybe not

Gear drives transfer harmonics to the valve train
This is hearsay and rumours, prove it. Don't just show me someone else's post .. PROVE IT!
The folks over at Pete Jackson think differently.

The KB gear drive I use on my SB I can adjust the cam timing with the gears on ... granted I do have to pull the timing cover unlike a belt drive ( I have been thinking of making a cover so I would pull the water pump and a cover) to make it some what easier

I've had a Pete Jackson dual idler gear drive in the hot rod since 2001. It's been used in a couple engines and has never given me any trouble. There are several thousand miles and countless high speeds runs on that thing. It still looked great with no measurable wear when I pulled the engine apart recently.

a engine with 4 cams, 32 valves and precision gears should no way be in the same topic with a single cam engine and general manufactured parts.
just sayin

why not? are we to believe that an engine turning twice as fast with three or four times as many gears in the train is not subject to the same (or greater) forces? they've been used in plenty of general manufactured two valve, single cam, pushrod engines as well. i've seen and used the milodon gear drives are you saying the gears aren't precision? i guess that's a matter of opinion from my perspective they are precision gears. gear drives have been being used in every type of engine from lawn mowers to race engines to aircraft to huge industrial engines for a hundred years. i call BS on the whole gear drive destructive harmonic deal. can anyone post verified information with regards to a gear drive causing problems (or failures) as opposed to millions of engines that have used them for a century without issue? generally speaking i would say the reason for chains and belts being used simply comes down to manufacturing cost, complexity and possibly weight. gear drives would normally be the most expensive, difficult to manufacture/implement and heaviest.
it goes back to 4 cams and 32 valves versus single camshaft and valve layout.
if you ever were in on a spintron test is would all be crystal clear for you.

With regards to Milodons gear drives, I just didn't like the noise. Setting up the cam timing can be a bit confusing too but once you've worked it out it's OK. HTH's Tig
