.....cut the step off the bottom and put a torrington washer in it's place to reduce wear?
It seems the bronze gear and the bronze bushing don't wear very well together? Wouldn't a machined/flat torrington take care of it?
I'm on my second one in many years, just inspected it and it's wearing mostly on the bottom just like the first (and like the others I have checked out, customer engines and so forth). It tends to score the steel shaft, because it's getting bronze particles thrown at it all the time.
I just pulled it, wasn't too surprised to see what it was doing...knocked the light scoring down with 600 grit and am going to put it back in. But have a longer term fix in mind....
I could have sworn I saw somebody selling them on ebay at one point years ago, already cut and with the washer, but maybe I've killed too many brain cells...
If not, thoughts? Good idea/dumb idea?

no it's not a dumb idea, it's the way they should be made. i'm not sure but you may have to turn a recess in the gear to use a three piece bearing. OTOH a single hardened washer might work between the two bronze surfaces but i don't know if anyone has done this. Leigh sent me this some time ago but i never ordered the parts. there had been a post about this very subject Quote:
"The Torrington number is NTA 815 and you have a choice of two different thicknesses thrust races. First one is .030 and the pn is TRA-815 Second one is .060 and pn TRB-815. You will need two races. I bought both sizes, but am only using the .030 thick ones"
here's the washer if you just wanted to use that washer

Thanks for the input, it seemed like a good idea at the time, thought I should run it past you guys as a sanity check. Been going through some maintenance on the gtx... I didn't hardly touch it last year, was concentrating on the shop build but now I can get back to the car projects

The KB kit has bearings. I would like to use the washer myself.
Edit: I see that KB is putting the bearing on top of instead of under the bronze gear. Sorry.

Quote:
I'd like to be proactive re: eliminating this as a potential wear point when running my first roller on the street. Is the solid washer option thin enough to not require machining the bottom of the gear?
I'm assuming the gear will need to be machined, but that'd be great if it did not
