318/440 crank flange is the same. Most 440's are neutral balance. 70-2 HP & 6pk engines had a special balance with a steel crank. Starting late in 72 most 440's got the cast crank which is a special external balance with the exception being some of the truck and 4-speed engines.

It's a 1979 440 out of a motor home. Would it be internally or externally balanced?? How do I tell??

It will have a cast crank and externally balanced. The harmonic balancer should read on the outer ring as follows; "440 cast crank only" It will vibrate with the 318 flywheel unless it is balanced for a 440 cast crank.

Yes I know that. They have a "special balance" flywheel and balancer with the steel crank. I had a 72 440 with cast crank. It was a very late built engine.

Dan. I noticed in your sig, Brewers performance. I'm on that site in another tab looking at the bolt on weights. Are those weights just for the flywheels you sell, or can they be used on a stock flywheel??
Looks like if I want to do a swap of either the 360 or 440 I need a new flywheel
Ugh. No one said it was easy, but now I need to decide what engine to swap

All cast crank big blocks use the same external balance.
The register installed bushing/bearing is fine but the pilot shaft still needs a hole in the crank to clear the tip of the shaft. (or cut the tip of the shaft off)
