318 versus 440 flywheel

318 versus 440 flywheel - 03/16/12 01:03 AM

I found a bell housing that will work with my 440 and 833/745 bolt pattern.

Question is, will the flywheel from my 318 bolt to the 440?? I know the 318 is neutral balance. Not sure what the 440 needs

As long as it is not a externally balanced 440,the flywheel will work fine.

318/440 crank flange is the same. Most 440's are neutral balance. 70-2 HP & 6pk engines had a special balance with a steel crank. Starting late in 72 most 440's got the cast crank which is a special external balance with the exception being some of the truck and 4-speed engines.

It's a 1979 440 out of a motor home. Would it be internally or externally balanced?? How do I tell??

It will have a cast crank and externally balanced. The harmonic balancer should read on the outer ring as follows; "440 cast crank only" It will vibrate with the 318 flywheel unless it is balanced for a 440 cast crank.

It can be used but it needs rebalancing as mentioned

70=71 hp 6pak are external balance the 72 hp are neutral balance.

Yes I know that. They have a "special balance" flywheel and balancer with the steel crank. I had a 72 440 with cast crank. It was a very late built engine.

Dan. I noticed in your sig, Brewers performance. I'm on that site in another tab looking at the bolt on weights. Are those weights just for the flywheels you sell, or can they be used on a stock flywheel??

Looks like if I want to do a swap of either the 360 or 440 I need a new flywheel

Ugh. No one said it was easy, but now I need to decide what engine to swap

Those kits are for use with McLeod wheels. We balance the stock cast wheels by drilling weight out of the wheel. If you were using a Mcleod wheel you can change the balance by changing the weight kit you bolt on.

Besides the external balance issue you're probably gonna have a problem with the cast crank not being drilled for the transmission pilot shaft.

The graphic below shows how to externally balance the 318 flywhel for a 440.

I thought that the 440 and 400 engines had a different balance factor....
Regarding the crank pilot hole, by now I'm sure that most are aware of the roller bearing that is available. It fits in the torque converter recess in ALL crankshafts. It seems to be a better design than a press in bushing.

All cast crank big blocks use the same external balance.

The register installed bushing/bearing is fine but the pilot shaft still needs a hole in the crank to clear the tip of the shaft. (or cut the tip of the shaft off)

I got a 143 tooth large flywheel from a truck. Im in So. Cal, Santa Ana area. Looks ready to run, smooth no rust, no glaze, pinhole to a balance hole but not affecting service. Its 14.5 in diameter and 11" clutch surface. probably 30 lbs specs to a big block forged app. $40 plus shipping if you want it. Ill post in sale items too.

strange that most replys concern the balance. I would check the measurements first. If you have a bellhousing that accepts the big 143 tooth flywheel or the smaller 383 housing that accepts the 130 tooth wheel. You will not engage the starter if you use the wrong combo. Then the major problem: A real 318 flywheel is drilled for a smaller clutch. It will not fit the 10,5" scalloped unless you drill it for the bigger clutch. And, you do not want the 440 torque through a 318 clutch. My
How do I know? Well, been through it, except I tried to use the 318 on a 340, same issue unless you can accept a weak clutch....
