Picked up a straight fender today to replace the "customized" one on my Ram. New fender is dark green metallic, where my Ram is dark metallic burgundy. Am I safe just wet sanding the green donor and spraying burgundy, or do I need to use a primer first (red, gray, black) for a good color match???

Are you saying strip it to bare metal first?? I guess you lost me on "seal it".

The clear coat on the top side of the donor fender is "spider webbing", but not lifting. I'd plan on wet sanding off the deteriorated clear coat before I spray.

all that bad clear needs to come off even if it looks like it sands ok, the spider webbing would show back up and I would prime and block it doing it that way. Sometimes those little spider webs are down to the base /primer, however deep it has to get sanded off to avoid issues later.

He meant you need to spray a coat of sealer on the fender before you paint it. Sealing is the last step before painting. Just sand all the old clear coat off, then spray the sealer and let it flash the proper amount of time per the spec sheet with the sealer...then paint it. No need to sand the sealer first. I would sand a place off on the old fender to see what color sealer was under the original paint, and buy that color sealer.

"shade tree repair"??? I wouldn't even bother with a sealer or primer. Assuming the paint is original factory. Just sand out the clear imperfections, making sure the clear that remains is bonded slid to the edge (no lifting), scuff and squirt.

If you go to bare metal in any spots then prime first.

Done many shade tree fixes this way, no issues.

Even small areas of bare metal that show up, like corners and edges, you can paint right over without priming them first. Just make sure the entire part is clean. Clean parts are very important.

Is seal it the same as prime it? If not what kind of sealer? (Brand and series name).

Yes and no. The sealer I have used in the past is actually epoxy primer (PPG DP90LF) After you have done all your body work, priming, and block sanding...you need to spray a coat of sealer on last thing before you apply the topcoat. Like someone above said, it's probably not necessary for a backyard job. Sometimes I forget to take my mind out of " Do it by the book restoration mode."

For a shade tree type job, just scuff the panel with 400 and shoot it.
