I use an old solvent can, load it up with the hardware and pour in some laquer thinner or whatever. Shake it good for a few minutes and then dump everything out. Wash and rinse everything off with some dawn or simple green to get the solvent smell and as a final rinse. Cuts the grease, oil, rtv ect without stripping off any coating so they dont flash rust.
that was going to be my next question. If I were to wire wheel everything down would it rust?? We are talking valve cover and oil pan bolts right now, but water pump bolts soon. Intake bolts are going to be new as are the head studs and exhaust bolts.
Thanks daty for the hobby shop tip. After I read that I remembered harbor freight. Gonna check them out in the AM. FOR NOW though I gotta get off the Internet and get my hands dirty lol. I have an old motor from who knows what I can put a wire wheel on it. Out to the shop lol

I'd suggest not useing w wire wheel (too aggressive) and if using taps/dies using a "thread chasing" set as it removes less metal than a thread cutting regular type & just cleans the threads. Shaking them up in a can of solvent sounds good then hand wire brush the threads. No exp w tumblers but I hear they work well

Update sort of. Tried the wire wheel and it cleans it quick. But I'm going to stick to the soak and scrub method. Then all I have to do is over the little bit of paint that's still there. I found a few tumblers on Craigslist I will check out. Experiment with used then get the good stuff. I'd post pics but I can't attach anymore haha

All this talk of wire wheels, paper towels and cleaners leave me ,been down that road many years ago . A quality ultrasonic (heated type) makes this task a non task,15 minutes gets even the nastiest bolts, brackets,or other small items clean as the day it was made. Yes, it costs a little up front but in the long run,if you do much work it really frees you up for more important tasks.http://www.lrultrasonics.com/

There is nothing funny about cleaning parts with a wire wheel. Cheap and effective. One problem though..... The wire strands from the wheel. They go everywhere! I've had them fly at my face, stick in my clothes, even my legs. One time at work, I kept getting an itch. After a few scratch sessions, I got pissed and pulled down my pants. There was a wire stuck in the bottom front of my underwear. Not good.
I'm just giving a heads up to those that may want a better method. Keep using a wire brush if you like it. Yep those loose wires sure are fun. I still use a wire brush to refinish some Rolex watch bands and create texture on gold, silver jewelry and always find it entertaining.

Those harbor freight tumblers are a joke imo. I have one and for all the noise and electricity it consumes. my shaker can method works just as well and costs me nothing besides some solvent every few months.
I use a vibrator from Eastwood with water and the green piramids. Works good and is better than wire wheeling. imo' ' HotRod magazine did a story on them this month. Although there picture are not impressive to me.

I have used all of the methods mentioned and generally a combination of al thr above is needed. The ultrasonic cleaner is by far the best bang for the buck and the least labor intensive. If I had a pile of bolts off a grimy 40 year old block I'd soak them in your Solvent of choice (simple green and purple power are my favorites) to get the heavy stuff off first so you dont trash the solvent in the ultrasonic cleaner. Follow up with 15 -20 minutes in the ultrasonic. I have a good general ultrasonic solvent to be the best in there. I tried dedicated ultrasonic rust removers but they did not work significantly better. If there is any rust left then you hit it with the wire wheel. Good luck

The ultrasonic cleaner sounds nice. I followed the link posted but couldn't find a price.
Would I be fine with a harbor freight vibrator if I soaked the bolts in solvent first, cleaned with a wire brush (not wheel)??
Not looking for show quality, just a clean bolt.

I got mine on eBay from seller e-fortune
Lookup item # 140333938761. I am very happy with my choice. It's small but I do the [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] stuff in a 5 gallon pail using electralisis. I gave away my harbor freight parts washer after getting these.
