There is typically a rubber (sometimes metal) retainer.

I just yank the brake pedal up real hard and it usually pops it loose. Sometimes I loosen the MC and stick something behind it to move it away from the firewall if the pedal can not move far enough up.

If it is out of the car I lock the MC down in a vice. Stick a steel rod through the big end of the push rod and yank straight out.

Hope it helps.

Oops.

Pace the plunger on a vice. Stick a steel rod in the big end of the push rod and yank.

Replace the plunger if it gets nicked.

Before you cut the pushrod, apply heat to the stuck end. It will screw up the old master cylinder, but since you're not reusing it, so what. Heat will probably melt or otherwise loosen the rubber "O" ring on the pushrod so it can come out. Otherwise lock the pushrod in a vise and beat the crap out the mastercylinder with a BFH. I know they can be difficult, but it will come out. Also try soaking the pushrod cup with some thin oil { atf ] for a day or two before beating on it anymore.

Got a floor jack? Pull the saddle (The swiveling cup that raises) off your floor jack, drop the pushrod through the hole the rod will fit through but the master cylinder will not, insert a steel rod through the hole where the bolt attaching the pushrod to the brake pedal normally goes, the rod should pass below the frame of the floor jack.... Raise the floor jack.. The rod will pop out with enough force....

I think Hugh is right. Get more violent.

Here is what you are fighting if Rick doesn't mind me stealing his pictures.

The groove in the pushrod snaps in the rubber ring which snaps in the back if the master cylinder.

Destroying the plunger is OK in your case since you are not reusing the Master Cylinder.

A flaming Wrench will work too.

Had exact same issue with my mc on my 70 sport satellite. The rubber had deteriorated to the point it was holding things tight. I ended up taking the piston out of the mc and the pushrod off the pedal. Put the pushrod in the vice, and wacked the piston with a hammer . . .

easiest way is this. Undo the 4 nuts holding the master cylinder onto the firewall. Pull it away about 1/2-3/4 inch and stick a spacer or two behind. I use a couple small chunks of 1x4. Go in the car and yank the pedal up. Bingo. It's out! Just don't whack the brake light switch when you pull up on the pedal. And- always double check the brake light switch adjustment after installing the new masted cylinder so the brake lights come on when they should and aren't staying on

floor jack works.

another method with the floor jack....put a long screw driver through the hole in the rod and put the shaft it horizontally under the floor jack, then hook and edge of the Mc mounting plate over the saddle and lift.. pops it right off.
