i have it out of the old mastercylinder but its the plunger on the end of the rod i cant get off!
Oops.
Pace the plunger on a vice. Stick a steel rod in the big end of the push rod and yank.
Replace the plunger if it gets nicked.

Got a floor jack? Pull the saddle (The swiveling cup that raises) off your floor jack, drop the pushrod through the hole the rod will fit through but the master cylinder will not, insert a steel rod through the hole where the bolt attaching the pushrod to the brake pedal normally goes, the rod should pass below the frame of the floor jack.... Raise the floor jack.. The rod will pop out with enough force....

I think Hugh is right. Get more violent. Here is what you are fighting if Rick doesn't mind me stealing his pictures. The groove in the pushrod snaps in the rubber ring which snaps in the back if the master cylinder. Destroying the plunger is OK in your case since you are not reusing the Master Cylinder. A flaming Wrench will work too.

Hey guys i have a 66 coronet with manual 4 wheel drum brakes. Im switching to a dual res M.C. and what i need to know is how the heck do i get the pushrod off of the old master cylinder? The new one didnt come with one! Not sure how to get it off but i dont want to screw it up! anyone? I need help fast!.......thanks joe
easiest way is this. Undo the 4 nuts holding the master cylinder onto the firewall. Pull it away about 1/2-3/4 inch and stick a spacer or two behind. I use a couple small chunks of 1x4. Go in the car and yank the pedal up. Bingo. It's out! Just don't whack the brake light switch when you pull up on the pedal. And- always double check the brake light switch adjustment after installing the new masted cylinder so the brake lights come on when they should and aren't staying on
