Have a 71 383. It's apparently externally balanced. What is the difference between it and externally balanced 400's, 440's and 360's?
What can I use for a converter?

Seems I remember that the 71's were the last 383's made and they were externally balanced. This one came with a weighted harmonic balancer like I have never seen. I've had 360's, 400's and 440's that were externally balanced, but this is different.

Some 2 barrel 71's were externally balanced. Mine was an original 2 barrel with a forged crank (internally balanced).

Then you need to use that balancer, the back end I have no idea but I assume it's close to the 400 ???

The 71 383 could have either if a two barrel motor.Damper is marked cast crank and engine I.D. pad will have the letter E on the pad.

All cast crank big blocks take the same external weight, the 360 needs a much larger weight.

Here's the conundrum: ALL cast crank B/RB engines used the SAME amount of factory imbalance, yet my 400 harmonic damper says "for 400 only" same as the 440 referred to above. Presumably there is a special 383 cast crank damper as well. YET, they have the same balance specs and can be interchanged no problem.

Chrysler was so intent on saving money they did a lot of weird things to save having two or three part numbers, yet here are three identical items with three castings. Bizarre.

The subject in the OP is converters and "all cast crank big blocks take the same external weight".

Here is the first line of the post:

"Have a 71 383. It's apparently externally balanced. What is the difference between it and externally balanced 400's, 440's and 360's?"

Get the flex plate from B+M , assuming that they all use the same weighted converter, and then you can use ANY neutral balance converter your heart desires .

An engineer might disagree with the interchange notion; although the amount of imbalance is the same, the total mass of the inertia ring is probably deemed to be specific to one crank.
