you may be correct . i believe the 67n tranny had the pump at the rear and you could push start it if the battery was dead . now the 68 was changed and i believe the pump drive was different and like said above the converter pilot is different . take the 68 converter and try mating it to the crank and see if it fits , u may have to have one of them machined .
No, they got rid of the rear pump in 66 (the 727 that is)

'68 is the changeover year for the 904, the '67 has a smaller input shaft and converter pilot hub.

so the 68 TC (& therefor the 68 trans) with the larger nub will not fit the 67 LA cranks' smaller recess correct?

Found out the 67 318 came with a 727 so the converter will work. The only potential grey area will be the flexplate.
What gray area , the flexplate only has to bolt to the converter , nothing is different.

Torque converter pilot may be incorrect.
That was my concern but, considering the car came with a 727 it may not be an issue. We have an aftermarket converter in the car so...

I would make certain of the pilot diameter, verses the crank cavity diam, for sure before stuffing it together.
Having a too-small snout in a too-big hole is asking for trouble.

If it's been verified that the motor was mated to a 727 there won't be a problem, the 727 never used the small converter pilot hub.
