I was wondering hows the quality of the bolts on a ser of lets say NOS LY rods.

I have NOS set of LY rods and I was wondering about the quality of the bolts that came on those from the factory. Are they good bolts? Comprable to something you can get from ARP nowadays?

How would those NOS rods with NOS bolts live in an old school street performace stock stroke 440 build?

There is no comparison between the two types. The stock rod bolts are the weak link in the rod.

1970 Plymouth 'Cuda #'s 440-6(block in storage)currently 493" 6 pack, Shaker, 5 speed Passon, 4.10's
1968 Plymouth Barracuda Convertible 408 Magnum EFI with 4 speed automatic overdrive, 3800 stall lock-up converter and 4.30's (closest thing to an automatic 5 speed going)

I was thinking the OEM bolts were OK, and that people just swapped em because they are no good to reuse and I guess you can get Ma Mopar OEM rod bolts anymore brand new.

After all, those were the rod bolts that came on 440-6 and HEMI cars, right?

Or did people back in the day when they raced the Max Wedges, race HEMIs, 440.6 A 12 package cars, etc changed the rod bolts over to ARPs or similar before they went out racing?

you had the rod bolt problem on another post. i dont know if this would make a difference but the torque on the arp is 60 foot pounds and stock rod bolts are 45.aftermarket rod bolts are worth it.

its 50 on the one im using....

I am inclined to toss these rods and use a NOS set of LYs I have here....but I was thinking of leaving the NOS rod bolts on and not bothering with the ARPs.

This is weirds I have used ARPs on stock rods on toher builds and never had this happen-

Bad example except for the hemi rod which had a larger rod bolt.

The 6pk rod came about because the 69 A12 had problems breaking rods , the 6pk rod design was good till whomever designed it DROPPED THE BALL and left the 3/8 rod bolts in them instead of upsizing to 7/16 bolts like the Hemi rods had.

The stock rod bolts will be fine for a grocery getter with a 318 ...

Domingo...spend the "wise" money on a set of 7/16" ARP rod bolts! Money well spent..in my opinion! Definately BETTER than the factory rod bolts...and in the long run...SAFER!
