Good for you, sometimes Lady Luck comes our way, makes up for the occaisional mishap/misfortune. I imagine Ma used what she had on hand if an item/inventory came up short as stopping the line was the last thing a foreman wanted to have happen on his shift

not uncommon at all.. have seen quite a few of them. even saw a friends 4 door, had 8 3/4 front disc brake and front sway bar.

just parted this one out a few years ago. six cyl, front disc brake, and 8 3/4. also had a rim blow wheel..

The 70 dart I have for sale is an 8.75 /6 disc brake car 3spd. My 70 duster (also for sale) is an 8.75 318 auto car

The 8.75 axle was part of the HD towing package. It was available even on slant six cars.

and yet a 77 318 Volare I used to own came with a 7.25. Yea, it broke. Sometimes mopar did some weird things.

I think the manual trans even in /6 tended to get the bigger rear end after 1970. Maybe something to do with the weight of the cars getting more and more as time went on. And/or warranty claims on 7.25 rears.

It seems a lot of these /6 and 318 1970 to 1972 Abodies with 8 3/4 tend to be sort of loaded (weight). A lot seem to have that option package that included the rim blow steering wheel. 8 3/4 and rim blow wheels seem to pair up often. And most of those also have A/C.

I don't think they were dumping this rear end in 70 and 71. I can sort of see late 1972. But Mopar didn't carry a complete 1 year inventory on rear ends.

Either the 7.25 was upgraded over the years or something is wierd. I have seen several LOADED 73-76 slant six 4 door Valiants and Darts with the 7.25 axle. They theoretically should have had the 8.25 if durability was a concern. I stick with the towing package theory. HD axle, Trans cooler in HD radiator and 7 blade fan with fan clutch.

Oh I agree. The later cars seem skimpy with the 8 1/4" rear. Although I do know of a 74 Dart Sport convertiple with /6 manual trans and 8 1/4". I'm thinking the manual trans did it.

But I don't think all those car we're finding the rear ends have trailer towing. MoparMarks, does the fender tag on those cars show trailer towing? Is trailer towing even on the fender tag?

Now IIRC, disk brakes automatically got you HD suspension.

Of the 5 cars mentioned on this thread with 8 3/4 rears, 5 had disc brakes.

This one didn't mention what brakes it had?:

This one is not certain what rear end it had originally. -but note it did have A/C, 318, vinyl top and the bigger looking front drums-

I would guess you got it when you spec'ed disc or 10" drums. I've never seen any 10" drums for small bolt pattern 7-1/4" rears.

In '73 they started using the 10" drums on BBP 7-1/4" with the BBP disc.

10" drums were optional on pre '73 5 x 4" bolt pattern 7 1/4" rears.

The A bodies around here usually never make it past the front gate at PullaPart with the 8 3/4's or disc brakes. There is a Mopar guy that snags them all.

My 71 Duster Twister has 10" drums and the 7.25 rear.

The local old time junkyard had (for years) a 70 Duster /6 3speed car with the 8.75 rear, but somebody took the axles and brakes a long time ago and everything was rusty as hell so nobody ever bought it.

I've been into A-bodies for 25+ years and sometimes it would surprise you to find 8.75 rears under cars that you wouldn't think would have them. I learned to look under EVERY car, cause you just never know.
