Need a new set of pistons. Long story short my machine shop put to much clearance in my block for my pistons. Now I'm going to have to fit a piston to the block. Where have you found the best value for customs?
Thanks
Mark

What size are your old ones? What combo? New? You may could recoupe some bucks selling them.

My block was supposed to be 4.375 and the machinist honed it to 4.380 so I have .013 clearance already

Man, seems that could have been avoided. Did he have the pistons at the time of the machine work? Why should you pay for HIS mistake? Atleast from my view, I would ask for compensation.

He had the pistons and the paper work from Ross. This engine ran this year and the mistake was not found until it was taken apart for inspection so compensation won't happen. I fault myself for not checking the work on assembly.

As I recently found out, B1 pistons are custom only and was told there is no off the shelf piston made.. I got a quote from JE Pistons of $80.00 per, plus the cost of the pin.... however I doubt this to be true as I have found every other custom made piston to be over $100 per..

So if anyone would post some prices, I'm sure it will be helpful to a lot of people here..

Can you have them coated? Not sure how thick coating is but it may help.

When I looked into having my pistons coated.. I think the coating is good for .002 per side which will only be .004 total... and there's nothing to prevent the coating from scratching off..

I think I paid around 100 dollar and have my old 440-1 pistons valve reliefs cut so I could either use my 440-1 heads or my B1 heads.

The good coatings are only good for about .0005" on each side.

PC-9™ is commonly used to salvage a motor that has excessive piston to wall clearance. Vintage motors and other applications with hard to find pistons can
have up to .004” of PC-9™ added to the diameter of a piston to tighten piston to
wall clearance.

I spoke with diamond this morning and I think I have narrowed my choice to roughly 6.535 rod and 1.35 piston or 6.385 rod and 1.50 piston.

Just My
go with the longer rod. It will make the piston much lighter, and the rods are common too.. Its your typical +.400 Chevy rod used in lots and lots of combo's.

I have generally always gone with the 6.53" rod in that application. i like ot keep the bobweight as light as possible in a stock block deal for sure.
