Cast number 2951250 is that a good head to build? Just picked up a 383 and it has these heads on it. What I have found it is a 68 440. Is that a good head for a 383. thanks Also is that a closed or opened chamber

That head was used on '68 383 & 440. They are open chamber with 2.08/1.74 valves.

Depends what they need.Usually you will have more in them than a good set of new aluminum will cost.Rocky

I would search for a set of reasonably priced 915's for the closed chambers or spring for aluminum ones again for the very desireable closed chamber & with pistons to match to get proper quench.

It depends a lot on what your goals are.

You will find that most comparison test info, shows that almost all the open chambered oem heads perform about the same if ported by the same guy.

If it's a cruiser car, thaose are more than good enough.

Yeah, if you just want a rebuilt stock head, they're fine. If you want porting, big valves, etc, then I suggest you take a look at some aftermarket heads. For the $ you have to put into cast iron heads, aluminums might not be much more $.

I've only come across 1 set of the 250 heads and they were an open chambered 2.08/1.74 valve head with the late model 516 head ex. port roof lump near the manifold flange.

They're a substitute head for the 906s. They have all the problems of the 906 and any other big block open chamber head. Out-of-the-box flow is less than 230 cfm, port stalls somewhere between 0.400 and 0.450 lift, the open chamber is 88-92 cc and has NO squish, the spark plug is in the wrong place, all in all it's amazing they ran as good as they did. The 915 head has a better chamber. The Edelbrock and 440Source heads have the 915 chamber or close and flow at least 30 cfm more, making them an easy choice.
