Last year I developed a bad habit of turning the wheel some(usually to the left) when letting go of the transbrake button. This causes me to have to correct when the wheels touch down. I usually hold the steering wheel at about 11-12 oclock as this is where it is most comfortable for me.
I tried putting some tape around the steering wheel at the top like Jeggie does and holding the wheel at 3 0clock to try and minimize movement but I still have the problem. I don't do it every time but I want to try and eliminate the problem completely.
Has anyone else had this problem and found an easy way to cure it?

I steer with my left hand... I put my elbow/arm on
the lower edge of the window on the door

That would seem to help but I will have to check if that would work with a B body. It would be a little further away than in a smaller car such as yours.

I also use my left hand and used to drive with it at the 12 o clock position and was advised to change to around 9 o clock when I started bringinmg the front wheels up.

I try to brace my elbow in against the roll bar and the bottom bar of my window net to keep it from moving when I luanch.

You might try to make sure you are firmly against the seat back before launching the car. If you are using the wheel to prevent smacking your head on the seat, you may be inadvertly turning the wheel slightly. AMHIK

Also, it may prevent a headache or two.

is your trans-brake button on your wheel?

Yes my transbrake button is on my steering wheel. It is on the right side. I release the button and go for the shifter. For some reason I end up turning the wheel a little downward(steering the car to the left). I think it is similar to when I am going down the road in my car and I look at something off to one side or the other. I always seem to steer in the opposite direction.

dont grip the wheel with your right hand, just use your thumb on the button, practice at home, plus your reaction time will pick up. it worked for me. left hand 10:00

440lebaron maybe I have you confused .I don't grab the steering wheel with my right hand. I do just push the button with my right hand and steer with my left hand. I have tried holding the wheel as close to 6 o'clock as possible to limit how much I am able to move my left arm but it does not feel comfortable to me and I don't feel as though I have as much controll to correct from that grasping point!

you may be moving the wheel unconsciously when you take your right hand off of the button. DO it at home and have someone watch you to see what you are doing, then make adjustments to your style.

take the trans brake button off the wheel! make a mount for it off the dash or off the shifter and see how you do.

Mike...I had the same thing happen to me early this year..I had never used a brake and it was a new learning expierience indeed! Footbraking the car,I would have my left hand at the 10:00 oclock position with my right hand on the shifter..All was well and good! When I went to the brake,I would put my thumb on the wheel mounted button and my left hand was still at the 10:00 oclock position..The car would always go to the left and I swore that there was something wrong with the suspension! I was kinda pissed after sticking that much money in the car to have it act like that!! I posted the same question here that you did and had a lot of help! I changed my driving technique to resting my arm on the door bar with my left hand at the 8:00 oclock position...Problem solved!! The car launches straight and true!! I was my own worst enemy! It took some time to do this repeatedly but now it is old hat...Try it!! It may work for you,too!!

If it's not too uncomfortable, try sitting a little closer to the steering wheel. Lots of body movement on launch( soft seat / seat mounting, improper belt installation, etc ) can cause this problem, weather you are jerking the wheels off the ground or not. Many times it's misdiagnosed as a chassis problem - or visaversa.

The best way to find out things is to mount a camera
in the car pointed where you see the wheel... then
watch it in slow mo... normally if you see what you are
doing you can correct it

It could be the car lacking/too much preload... if
you were foot braking then changed to a trans brake
you most likely upped the rpm so you would be in a
higher torque range at launch
