I think I'm going to put together a 434" SBM and I wanted you guys to chime in. 4.155" bore R3 4.00" stroke 6.200" rod W9 Heads (P5007065AB) W9 Intake (P4876162) Cam & Compression can be anything but I'm looking to make around 700hp Thoughts?

71 Demon = Body 4.00" stroke is enough The car will be setup to race and then drive it on the street once in a while. Fuel = gas 104 or better

Why is 4.00 enough? Tall deck judging by the manifold..Why not lay the stroke to it, you have the head for it.

The only thing stroke is good for is moving your power range around. The more stroke the more you lower your RPM range.
However bore is more beneficial for making HP. If the bore is small such as 4.100 with a W9 head you sacrifice head flow from shrouding the valve. 4.155" will work but I would go bigger.

And how hard did you turn your 441 with the 4.125" crank?

but the stroke will help with valvetrain longevity for street duty. x3 on the bigger bore. smallblocks have been small for decades. pull out all the stops.

That engine had a very good head on it. The block was not an R3 and could only safely go 4.125" bore. It's not like I ordered a 4.125" stroke crank. I bought it from the original purchaser and didn't know any better. That engine was built to run with nitrous. The crank was also a Custom Billet LA Enterprises Kryptonite crank. And yes I used the crank with the next build a 457 that later was a 468. From that experience I learned boring from 4.200" to 4.245" was a really big improvement. This crank caused nightmares running a torqueflite as it made too much torque with nitrous. With the powerglide it was much better. My point with the post was not to bash stroke. If you run two identicle displacement engines one with a displacement made up with a long stroke the other with a large bore, the short stroke large bore is going to run better. This is especially true when running a head designed around large bores. Some argue the trucks only ran up to 4.185" so that is what one should run. That deal was due to a bore limit rule. The best deal is to have all the bore the block will go and as long a stroke as possible to facilitate a piston and rod combo that you need. But, a lot of classes are displacement limited. Thought where the poster was wanting to build a 439 he should try and do it with a larger bore. Just my opinion. Leon
I really think I lack in power due to the small bore I run... when I need a freshening I going to go with a much bigger bore to unshroud my intakes

If it was mine, I'd do a 4.220 x 4.00 447ci.
Best of both worlds.

I agree, run all the bore you can for the most HP then run all the stroke you can to get the RPM down to a more valve spring friendly RPM. If you are cube limited then run the biggest bore allowed then stroke it to take advantage of the displacement allowed. Do you really think the NASCAR or Indy or Formula 1 guys would not run a longer stroke if they were allowed? No. They all do just like I said, run the biggest bore they can then strok it to the displacement limit. How many NASCAR guys are out there only running 330 inches because they don't need the extra stroke?
