I have removed the leaf springs and shocks from my 65 Barracuda. What would be the best was to remove a lot of surface rust. I am soaking some parts small enough, but I'm talking about the bottom of the car as well as the rear end itself. I know I will have to replace the floor pans but thats later.
Also where could I find a gasket for the rear end as it has leaked sometime in the past.
Thanks.

I would think you should be able to get a gasket for the rear end at NAPA. If it's the factory rear end, it will be a 7 1/4. You might try a wire brush cup on a grinder to get the surface rust off, or get the parts sand blasted.

Maybe you could try one of the rust treatment/converter products, such as the ones from Eastwood, etc.

As for the gasket, yes, NAPA should have it. Otherwise, I've had good results with "Right Stuff" gasket maker on diffs.

Thanks guys, I'll check with NAPA next week. Nice to see a Carolina friend on here. I just wondered about the rust converter. Does it really work or just cover it up.

They have the rust converter in a spray can here at the parts store. Works great. Ya still gottas knock off the surface rust then spray it. Goes on clear then turns kinda flat black. I've used it on all kinda stuff even small spots on 1/4 panels. Makes the metal hard again and is sandable and paintable.

Thanks for the info. Almost moved to Hampton earlier this year. Lot of forclosures there at good prices. Ended up in Kernersville NC because of my wife's job. Have a great day. I was cleaning the rear end and most of the stuff falls off with a good brush, so I should be ok on that part. When I get toward the front passenger side is where I have a real problem. I'll have to replace the floor, front and rear, but thats aways off and I have plenty to do in the presant.
Have a great day

The rust converter works by converting the rust to a more stable phase, then covering it up.
Others use a moisture cured polyurethane that seals over the rust and doesn't let any more oxygen in, thus no more than is already there. That's like the POR-15.

Thanks for the info. I'll get back to work on that in the morning. Decided to get up leaves before the rain comes in Tuesday and Wednesday. Is there a brand that is better than another.
