Guys,

I'm sure this question must have been asked before. Other than the axle lengths what's to stop the axles & brakes from a 65 axle fitting into a 63 axle case? Is it possible?

Thanks Billy

B-body or C-body? If you're asking about the B-body, the '65 axles are about 1/2" too long for the '63 housing.

The brakes would fit with the proper length axles and Green bearings.

two totally different axles..

the 63 has the tapered/keywaued axle, the drums have the hub swedged to them. and the bearings are smaller in outer diameter.

the 65 has the separate drums and hubs like all the 8 3/4 rears till 74

I am truckless..

the biggest problem with B body axle shafts is that every 2-3 years they make them 1/8 inch wider or more which means when you replace them you have to order custom axles if you cant find the exact year used replacement---however A and C body axle shafts stayed constant at 28 inch and 30 inch which makes life simple because you can buy them for $100-130----the A body set up makes more $ sense to the hobbyist because the housing cutdown should be about $100+ $250 for 2 new axles---if you buy 2 new custom axles from someone like moser it will be $500----yes the A body axle fits under a 70 roadrunner---done it several times---yes you have to move the spring pads--thats the something the housing narrowing person can do for you----bob

I put a complete drum to drum 8-3/4 rear from a 65 B-body in to my 63 Sport Fury. Bolted right in and worked great and got rid of the pressed drums. Ron

FWIW, my '63 & '64 housings were different widths. Both had the tapered axles, of course.

'62-3 are the same and the most narrow, the '65 housing is more narrow than the '64 ('64 MW cars used the '62-3 housing).

Aren't the 1965, 1966, and 1967 B-bodies rears the same width?

No, the '66-67 housings are 1/4" narrower than the '65. ('65=54.5"/'66-7=54 1/4")

'65-'67 housings are identical (54.25" end to end).

BTW, I sell new, 1 piece, high-strength axle shafts for any '62 and newer housing ($300 pair with studs and green bearings installed).

Dr.Diff,

I got the measurements I posted above from the "Guide to the Chrysler 8 3/4 rear" chart, I haven't checked all of the measurements, since I don't have every axle housing variation, but, the five different housings I checked against it were quite accurate. I'll keep your info handy though.

Dr Diff would them axles work fine in my 63 since I race it a few times a year ? And are they the right lenth since I have a 65 B-body rear ? I plan to replace the stock axles in my rear now some time in the next year. Oh and can I get them with the longer 1/2" studs ? Ron

Yes. I make custom length axle packages as well as correct length axle packages for '62-'63, '64, '65-'67, '68-'70 and '71-'74 B-body rears in 30 and 35 spline. Choose standard length press-in, 2" screw-in or 3" screw-in lug studs.

I thought the housing ends were different between the tapered axle rears and the later rears ?

Also what is the length of the 62/63 rear ?

With the exception of the shallower axle seal bore, '62-'64 housing ends are the same as the newer version. In other words, you must run a narrower wheel bearing lock ring to clear the inner seal.

Correct housing widths are listed in Moparts Tech Archives as well as Hollander's Interchange.

B-body housing widths (end to end):
'62-'63= 53 1/4" (And '64 Max Wedge)
'64 = 55 5/8" (Exc. Max Wedge)
'65-'67= 54 1/4"
'68-'70= 54 15/16"

All these housings share the same perch dimensions (44" on center, pinion 4 degrees up when perches are level).

Where do you get the narrower wheel bearing lock ring ? Could a person use a tapered bearing in that 62-63 housing with the narrower ring ?

Never knew a narrower collar was available. To me, the only reason to use the Green bearings on this installation is to be able to remove the inner seal and not have to worry about seal/collar interference.

Bearing Technologies (Green Bearing Company) makes the narrow lock ring.

In fact, ST-400 Green bearings come with the narrow ring included in the kit. BTW, the only difference between the MO-400 and ST-400 Green bearings is the width of the lock ring.
