Willie,that's what I was thinking! The cause of the problem was a faulty ignition switch..which was sticking in the START mode..just enough to break off ONE TOOTH on the ring gear! Needless to say,I replaced the switch a while back!

In some places it looks like the gear is bottomed out, which won't let the bendix push the gear out fully. The paint is wiped off in the bottom of the teeth, but only 1/2 way across the face. On a Chevy you fix that with shims - I don't know how you would fix that on a Mopar, other than just trying to wiggle the starter away from the engine while tightening.

For all I know it could be the whole ring is welded
on a little off center... .020 is allowable
