RING GEAR TOOTH REPAIR???

RING GEAR TOOTH REPAIR??? - 11/08/11 04:20 AM

As you can see on the picture...one tooth was damaged by a sticking starter bendix. It's pretty much down to nothing left! My question is...can this be weld-repaired and re-ground to match the other teeth? I wouldn't think I'd have to replace the ring gear...just repair this one tooth! Please give me your opinions! Thanks in advance, fella's! Randy B.

I DO NOT RECOMEND THIS Back in the day I welded up a tooth just like that and filed it to shape, worked fine for me then....

Bill,if it worked for you..why don't you recommend doing it? Did it not last?

A good tig welder can fix that reasonably easy. Build up weld, grind to shape - done like dinner, as long as you fixed the problem that broke it the first time.

Willie, that's what I was thinking! The cause of the problem was a faulty ignition switch..which was sticking in the START mode..just enough to break off ONE TOOTH on the ring gear! Needless to say,I replaced the switch a while back!

I wouldn't hesitate for a second to weld it up and re-shape it back. Weld will be stronger than the rest of the teeth on it.

when i brought my converter in to a local trans shop API here in toronto for a freshen up, they noticed a missing tooth and welded it up and reshaped it, been working fine for about 4-5 years now. funny thing is i knew it was broken but it never caused any problems so i wasn't even considering fixing it when i brought the converter in, but vic (the owner of API) wouldn't let it go out without fixing it and didn't even charge me for it. it should be a fairly easy fix for any place that services converters.

I think you also have issues with contact depth of the teeth on the gear.

Mike...you're hired! Hope you're enjoying the "North Country"! Fred,I noticed that too! Looks like the starter teeth were only engaged 50% of the ring gear tooth depth. I've got a new starter on the shelf..I'll just use that when the X gets put back together! Thanks for taking a look! Randy B.

In some places it looks like the gear is bottomed out, which won't let the bendix push the gear out fully. The paint is wiped off in the bottom of the teeth, but only 1/2 way across the face. On a Chevy you fix that with shims - I don't know how you would fix that on a Mopar, other than just trying to wiggle the starter away from the engine while tightening.

For all I know it could be the whole ring is welded
on a little off center... .020 is allowable
