do you have the part # ? if it's a shelf piston your going to get pretty thin below the valve pockets. they're probably about .200" thick in that area with that forging. easy enough to measure though.

...and on this same-vein ... THIS is why most people who build PS moders(so I have been told) ...do ALL machine work BEFORE putting in ring grooves.
Any machine work AFTER the grooves are put in .. it can distort the piston.

I hope anyone capable of machining pistons, knows to clamp them in a piston vise (or fixture), and not a vise off the railroad. Wedge if you need to cut .080 off a new piston, to gain compression, sounds like comp.height of piston is off. I would consider different pistons with a better baseline spec.
