Did stock 383 magnums come with 1 bolt or 3 bolt cams? I'm
going to re-cam the 70 383 in my 71 Power Wagon for low end
torque & didn't want to pull the timing cover off to find out.
I've heard the factory installed whatever they had on the line,
so not all hp motors got the 3 bolt cams??

No 383 ever came with a 3-bolt cam, the only Wedge to get one was the 440-6.

Thanks John & that makes it much simpler. I was considering an Engle
K54 or Hughes ah1928bl. Crane makes Summit Racing's cams & they
have one similar to the Engle for only $54. Any input on these choices?
thanks.

If you're putting in a new cam, that project should surely include a high-quality timing chain set also, so just make sure they match.

I'll get a Cloyes double roller & will replace the water pump, too.
Thinking of the Summit cam cause the price is great & they're local,
but really trust Hughes & Engle's mopar grinds.

If you have an HP, I'm not sure that a cam change is needed. If it all or near stock, then the OEM cam is about right. I had a long conversation w/ Scott Brown a few years back about doing a custom grind for a 383 Bee. The car was #'s matching and I didn't plan on changing much, if anything. I was going to throw in a new chain as it had some slop, figured I'd swap the cam.

His conclusion was that he might get me 10-15 HP at the most and maybe a little more torque, but with the cost, it was hard to justify. He was honest enough to talk me out of handing him any money for that one.

What are your specs? That truck has a lot of weight to get moving. Big cam might hurt it pretty bad.

If your putting a timing chain & gears in it really doesn't matter whats in there now, as long as the cam & gears set matches.... Use what you feel is the better design....

I've had several original 426 M.W.,1963 415 HP and 1964 425 HP. no three bolt cams in them from the factory

1970 and 1971 440-6pk would have come with a 3 bolt cam.

No , the 440 4 bbl had lower compression ratio than a 6pk , 9.7 ...

Thanks Randy & I was thinking of switching, but Summit's cam is only $54 & that's hard to beat & made by Crane, too. But if I ever decide to swap the 383 for my 451, maybe a 3 bolt setup would be a better selling factor if I decide to turn it loose. But being in a truck, I think the one bolt would be fine.
Hope you've been able to enjoy some top down crusin w/ the Chally.

The number of bolts in the cam has to do with the valve action of the cam.

I really don't think a 1 bolt vs a 3 bolt would be a deal breaker in selling an engine .

Thanks John. Summit's 6400 cam has a power band of 1500 - 5K, lift @ .050 is 214 int/224 ex & advertised duration of 272/282. Lift is 442/465 & has a 112 centerline. Do you think this would be a good
cam for the truck? (3.55's w/ 35" tires.)
