I'm looking for suggestions on beefing up the bottom end of my SB. It will be 340 main, 3.580 stroke. Should be just under 500 hp.

Just ARP bolts? Stud girdle? Even thought about a partial fill, but I would like to maintain cooling in case I use it for a street motor.

Thoughts appreciated....thanks

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

Under 500 I would just roll with stock everything.

Good rod bolts and main studs never hurt but other than that I'd say you're fine.

As far as rods go I would buy new GOOD ones, thats a given. Wouldnt bother with the stockers.

Thanks. I'm good on the rod bolts(ARP 2000)they will be streched properly. I think I'll just use some ARP main bolts, they really don't cost that much and the piece of mind is worth it.

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

So you just bought new rod bolts? You will have to get the rods resized. May as well get new aftermarket rods that come with new rod bolts..

solid machine work and balance it, oil systems are pretty good for the most part but use a good pump drive (hardened) you can open up some oil passages to get more oil to the bottom end, full groove mains will provide more oil to the rod's but will sacrifice oil pressure.

If I would use full groove mains and the HN series rod bearings for extra clearance, would it sling too much oil up top for the rings to control? I've had good luck w/ the 1/2 groove mains.

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

Wanna play it a little safer, you could consider Billet main caps and studs for the middle 3 - usually the first problem that shows up on a sm blk when making over 500 hp.

My 408 is around 550hp, it only has main studs, align honed mains, full groove mains and King aluminum rod bearings on Comp Star H beam rods. The oil passages are drilled and the pump is ported and matched to the main cap. It runs about 60# of pressure at cruise speed, that doesn't worry though, I know the volume is there.

How do you get more volume to the bearings without increasing the pressure or galley size?

I would go with main studs and align hone the mains because the caps can change with studs. As far as bearing I can't see any reason not to just run a standard P bearing set. Drill all the gallerys. If you are only turning 7,000 you may want a high volume depending on your clearances and oiling system. If you are turning higher and have the oil restricted save some power and run a standard pump with a port job. You shouldn't need any hard block. Nothing wrong with a short fill as it will dampen detonation.

I should've been more specific, the oil passages in the block have been enlarged. The pump is a HV.

Can you explain the short fill & dampen detonation thing....

Take a simple can of juice. Bang on it with a hammer. You will feel the resonance of the hammer all over the can. Fill the can with block filler and hit it with the hammer. Note some block fillers are better than others. Can you tell the difference.

Can you fill or 1/2 fill your block and still be able to drive on the street without it over heating?? Not talking about driving a 100 miles a day but maybe to the store, church or a local cruise??

We drove one way more than we should have on the street with a 3/4 fill. Steel TA heads and a 340 block. It was very cool on water temp. But, sit at a few stop lights and you could see the oil pressure getting low at idle. I'm told all you need to do is run an oil cooler and keep going. From my experience I would agree that would probably work fine.

I didnt like it... think of a filled block as a
big heat sink... the water doesnt draw off nearly
as much as a standard block because the water isnt
touching that much area... now the oil is what is taking
the heat off... a big oil cooler is a MUST

Ive a good half fill in my 410 with a crs ele pump and cross flow rad, as well as a 19 row oil cooler, full trans blanket and B@M cooler with fan...one fan on I can keep it at 180, two fans 160 on a street car with no worries, I worry more about the rapid cool down cycles vs running hot...

On shutdown from 180, it can hit 120 water temp in a couple minutes , I shut it off there and let it cool natural.

On last freshenup I did notice the area hard blocked had the high temp paint blistered from the heat it holds but at the same time things have stayed good enough in still running the calico bearings from the org build over 3 years ago.

With arp 2000 bolts they will get changed next time as I run them through 2 stretch cycles when new and 4 times apart they are done next time around.
