What if a cylinder head has a O-ring receiver groove machined into the heads, and your not going that route. I know decking will take care of it, but what if you dont want to deck out the groove? The block will not have the groove in this case. I dont see how it can effect the seal as long as the O-ring is inside or even out side the head gasket fire ring?

You could always use copper wire in the O-ring groove. Then file the wire down flat.
