Be specific as to where you are reading. (e.g.-in the collector or at the port exit.) If you speaking of your specific application from what I vaguely know of it I'd guess (<)1450*F at the port. Ideally, you could balance port-to-port EGT's with jetting or intake manifold manipultaion. I'd taylor your AF first and whatever your EGT is...it is If you know what I'm saying. Because spk adv. has a large effect.

Exactly.
EGT's are good for cylinder to cylinder variations, not for dialing in A/F or spark advance. There are a lot of variables affecting the numbers.

a friend just dropped a valve in his boat. he has a egt on the number 1 cylinder right by the exhaust port which is the exhaust valve that broke.

i'm thinking his egt's were in the 1300 range

540 bbc.

1300 is about normal BUT it make a difference whether
the reading is 1" off the edge of the flange or 2"
and so on.... at work(when I was) I tried to get a standard
of 1" so we could ALL talk the same numbers.... now
days I use the EGT just for balancing the intake
runners and I put the end of the probe right in the
center of the port dead nuts on 1"... I use a set
of calipers to set it

Mr P body can you elaborate on how you use the egt's to tune intake runners? Also have you done work with smallblock DP's like the stealth and rpm and M1 sp?

Start with the carb square jetted... run the car and
read what every cyl temp is(like I said ALL of my probes
are exactly in the same place on all of the cyl) and
if some are running hotter than others its running
leaner so its a matter of opening those runners up
to get more fuel OR closing down the others... I
try to get them all within about 10*-15* on all of
them... if I could use 8 O2 sensors I would but they
really block the flow when your talking primary tubes...
I also use 1/16" probes instead of 1/8 or even 1/4
probes
