What is that condenser looking item on the back of the dash that goes to the voltage limiter. I'm replacing my circuit board and VL and need to know what this is and should I replace it at the same time. I accidently fried the power circuit on the board checking it. I know, I know. Dave 69 Charger

The condensor is for noise suppression of the AM radio, when the voltage limiter makes/breaks its internal contacts.. Also the condensor helps to absorb part of the spark that can burn/pit the voltage limiter's internal contact points..

The voltage limiter works using a bimetal strip that makes and breaks contact at a predetermined rate so the output is 5 volts. Like anything that arc, sparks or interupts power it will generate radio interferrence. The capacitor or condensor (same thing, different nomenclature) lowers the amount of radio noise generated. Yes, they do wear out. Craig

So where do you get the condensor?
Best action is to upgrade to the solid state voltage limiter, no contacts so no condensor is required.. Sean @ RedLine Gauges carries them..

Thanks, but I'll pass. That's what got me in this mess in the 1st place, puttin volts where there wasn't supposed to be any. I"ll just go with the built-in limiter. Thanks though. Dave

Go to Radio Shack and get a .05 micro-farad, 600 volt capacitor and wire it in parallel with the current one. When they go bad, they get leaky and placing a new one in parallel will increase the total capacitance. Or you can replace the limiter with one from Dash Worx. Their ads are on this board. http://rt-eng.com/mediawiki/index.php/Main_PageI did go with the Dash Worx limiter. It is physically the same size. I passed on the three terminal regulators as I have not had good luck with them in other applications, none of them automotive. The current on the dash is uncomfortably close to the device maximum current, I like to see around 75% head room in a design like that and it just isn't there. Craig

There was a magazine article in Mopar Muscle November 1992 issue that told how to build them using components from Radio Shack.
I have built at least 3 and they work great. I think Redline charges about $50.00 for them but you can do it yourself for less than $10.00 in parts and supplies and a couple of hours time.
I got 1 from RedLine for about $30 @ the Spring Fling.. What I like about RedLine is that they are a small, fully experienced shop just for gauges and electrical things. They are located about 30 minutes away and I like to talk/deal directly to a live, knowledgible person...
