I thought it was just a linkage adjustment. When I adjust for Park (Shifter in P and tranny lever all the way back) I can turn the engine over but there is no first gear available. When I adjust for 1st gear ( 1 on the Shifter and tranny lever all the way forward) I have first gear but the engine wont turnover.

I suspect my shifting mechanism is welded in the wrong spot, about 1/2" too far back. When adjusted for Park....I have about another 1/2" of travel possible on the shifter.

Do I have to remove my seats/console/carpet and cut/reweld the shifter bracket a 1/2" forward?

Sounds like a mismatch of linkage parts... If it were just welded in the wrong location you could adjust the linkage to compensate.... The lever on the trans doesn't have the same ratio as the shifter... Could also be a problem of the bellcrank ratio but I doubt it... Probably the trans lever is to long....

Its a linkage problem. Pull the lever to neutral and see if it starts. jiggle from reverse to drive and see where it starts and then you know which way you have to adjust.

I did that...I took off the plate on the console to get a look at the shifter mechanism. It just doesn't make sense as to why I can get one and not the other. Park is more important obviously but I want 1st gear too. The shifter being all the way back in the mechanism nets me about half way through 1st and 2nd gear at the trans. I am gonna remove the three bolts holding that mechanism in tomorrow. move it down about 5/16" of an inch and vice grip it into place and check it that way. Its been like this for ooooooo...bout 11 years...I just always left it in Drive and went about my merry way...When I installed the Gear Vendors I was trying to figure out why I couldn't hit 1st gear and gear 1.5....at least now I know why.

Did this problem just pop up? New installation?

Crawl under the car and have somebody run the shifter through all the gears, look for lost motion; check for missing/worn bushings in the linkage.

Going by this picture attached....can I cut down this last part of the gear selector positions. I can't see why I can't adjust from the linkage but it only accepts one of the other. Its strange because I used this installation in the car as a guide to welding in the console unit for my 70 Charger and that one worked flawlessly.

sounds like you need a shorter lever on the transmission.

Aw jeez...don't tell me that...im on the other side of the world...Anyone have the correct length of lever available off hand for a 69 Charger (End of lever to center of shaft) I know we were piecing together linkages way back when....I wonder if we installed the one off the 67 Monaco by mistake...

you can weld up the hole and re-drill it closer to the pivot. I can check the length of the lever later tonight or tomorrow.

If you can and its not too much trouble I'd appreciate it.

If I have the wrong one....does anyone sell the correct lever?

Is this a floor shift! If so you can grind the stop on the first gear end enough to allow 1st to engage. make sure all the nylon bushings are good and in place!

Yeah, in the picture I put up earlier its a floor shift. The arrow is pointing at the 1st gear position. I checked all the bushings and they are intact, smooth, and lubricated.

Grinding the slot longer will allow you do hit at the detent locations but the shifter doesn't properly align the detents with the shift gate locations... Get the linkage sorted out..

yes i have done that with a revers manual that would not always get third (1st position) when you got park. 1/16"
to 1/8" 1.5mm to 3mm goes a long way!.

Make sure the leaver on the tranny is tight and not worn as sometimes they will move and it takes a fair amount of pressure to move it gear to gear!

What he said , you can easily modify the lever on your trans.
