Being a RS its probably a turbo, had two of them, father in law is still driving one. http://www.dsmtuners.com/ Probably the best search engine and forum for these cars. FSM and haynes etc are pretty much all you need usually. Let me know if you need more help, I have the FSM for electrical.

If its a 1g 2.0 dual overhead cam 4g63 then it doesn't have a crank position sensor, its probably the camshaft angle sensor. You can adjust base timing with that. But as you said probably a good chance of a bad o2 or vacuum leak. They make loggers for the ob1 or you can use a buzzer to get the trouble code if there is one.
