I'm going to help a friend add discs to his 68 Sport Fury Convertible.. I know the always mentioned preferred setup is the 73 Chrysler discs... Looking at part numbers it appears they are actually used in 72 & 73 and they are used on all 72-73 C bodies, Dodges, Plymouths & Chryslers..... Is this correct? If so it makes finding them a little easier than just 73 Chrysler Thanks!!

Hopefully my memory is on, so hope some of this info is helpful. I think when 1973 models were coming out in late 72' the models started carry the perfered 73' style brakes. I believe they are diffrent as 1972 earlier brake rotors due to the bearing size change to 1973 production. The reason everybody like the 1973 is because they use the the newer rotors, which are way cheaper by like $100ea. Now those came on diffrent models, but if memory serves me right, the imperial used a diffrent bolt pattern. All other models for that year should work nicely with 4.5 5lug pattern. I used to get a bunch of those from the demo derby guys because they couldn't use them. I even helped put a set on my friends 1966 monaco. Cass (a.k.a. Dr Diff) has some upgrades he could recomment, as well as AndyF. Magnum Force Still has the tubular upper control arm jigs incase your pal wants to do some lowering and wants the upper CTA's for some suspension tuning. I'm sure a few folks will chime in to say I'm wright or wrong, but at least it gives you something to read tonite.

I would like to add that the brakes for 73 were a one year only deal.
74+ are a whole different design.

I'll second the 2 above posts.
late 72 and 73 only.
You can tell by the seal diameter, the one for the 73 ( and late 72) has a 2 5/8 seal and the early 72 takes a 2 11/32 seal acourding to the rock auto cataloge.
I only know this as I put 73 C-Body spindles on my Challenger. The 74-78 are a different deal.
Hope that helps
Brad

Some late '72 cars supposedly got the '73 setup, but not all 72's. In fact I've never actually seen a '72 with the '73 rotor but the books say they are out there.

The '69-'72 setup works just as well as the 73 anyways, it just that the rotors are harder get and about double or triple the price.

And yes, it is all C body Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler cars, but remember NOT Imperials.

any c-body from 69 to 73 can give you donor brakes.

late 72 to 73 were the once piece rotor, and can be purchased new for around 30 bucks, since the same rotors were used on vans up till the mid 80's.

the earlier 69-72 were 2 piece. those rotors run around 130 each.

Dr. diff sells a bearing spacer that lets you use the new one piece rotor on the older spindles, so it doesn't matter which type you find.

imperials are different and do not work.
older than 69 and you get the budd disc brakes, which are harder to find parts for, and the parts you do find are very expensive and generally have to be rebuilt.

oh, I forgot.
power disc brakes also have a bit of a glitch when you replace them for that year.
the boosters for drum brakes do not supply enough force to lock up the disc from the later model cars.

while you can run the later model boosters, this causes some interference problems.
you will not be able to shift to 2 or 1 with a column shift car, and if it has auto pilot, it will not bolt up or clear.

I did use the 68 drum booster and it did brake sufficently. as well or better than the drums. just don't expect tire smoking locked up panic stops.

in order to get the correct booster, you have to order the budd disc brake booster for that car.

How about 13 inch rotors with Viper calipers? This kit fits the 1973 C-body knuckle.

This is a man who cruises, not hard on his stuff & doesn't worry about flashy... Besides if he already had 73 spindles he'd already have disc brakes... Seems like designing an adapter to put discs on an earlier more common spindle would be a better seller.. I understand the advantage of the bigger bearing but honestly the small bearings seem to live Ok if they have clean grease from time to time...

Thanks for the help guys!!

My Coupe is a C body front end, but it is LIGHT, so I went with Wilwoods. I think AndyF's kit is the way to go with the big C's though...
Factory stuff works well, but can be hard to find...

well scaredbird if they are still around has a conversion kit.
I have read they work ok. only issue I have seen on the b-body kits is they push the wheels out.
so if you were close the wheel wells, it will push it out further.

I noticed a couple dockers responded here. Let me say you might just want to go to the c-bodydrydock and have a look around. this is a common topic and the site is for c-bodies only, so the info you can glean is worth the time to stop in.

I've been poking around the Drydock... But being a member here & knowing there are plenty of sharp guys here I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.... I need to find time to go wrecking yard hopping...
