drop a bottle of lucas trans additive in it, I had a 46 re in a durango at work, fluid was cooked, shifteed hard, but it smoothed it out...prob not fixed but it bought the customer some time...as you know those trans are notoriously problematic

Pray tell...I have one in an '01 Durango R/T. Hasn't been troublesome. Changed the fluid to Amsoil at 50K, plan do so again at 100K (92K now). Anything else I can do to keep gremlins at bay?

They tend to start having issues around 125K on the norm, some will last longer, seems like alot more have issues before 100K, I had issues with mine, It just had a basic rebuild done to it before i bought it & was never right (lesson learned), thankfully i wasn't out the 1400.00, But come to find out it was converter related "lock-up" issues with mine, The tranny guy says this is where most of the problems come from especially when no codes are thrown, even causeing delayed shifts or erratic & even higher RPMs on the highway, Most tranny shops install a basic cheapo converter on these trannys & it is an "obsolute" no no, You need to install a top quality converter, a good 450-500.00 bucks, On the low side they cost around 1800.00 for a complete rebuild, on the high 2200.00, so if someone says they will do it for less, look out . The noids in them are not a big issue, if they fail or act up, they will throw a code & store it, so if no codes are thrown, fluid/filter are good, bands are adj. & kickdown currected, you better look at the converter, The lock-up was an issue in them & can/will cause issues in any gear.
