Trans issue. 46RE auto - 07/30/11 02:09 AM

I have a 46RE in a 96 dakota, that has just started to have a delayed shift hard shift from 1-2 gear and and very delayed shift from 2-3 gear. When the trans does shift to 3rd gear..it will after a few seconds shift back down to 2nd gear. Fluid is not burnt, and is at correct level. I have adjusted the throttle cable, with no improvement. I hooked up a code reader..no codes are present. Any Suggestions on where to look/what to do next? thanks!

drop a bottle of lucas trans additive in it, I had a 46 re in a durango at work, fluid was cooked, shifteed hard, but it smoothed it out...prob not fixed but it bought the customer some time...as you know those trans are notoriously problematic

Have you ever changed the fluid and filter? It might help.

Fluid and filter were changed within the last year...

Unfortunately they aren't setup correctly from the factory, at least from what I've read on here. We have a 44re in our durango and it first started slippin from 1-2 until you let off then you could give it some more gas. If it does go out and you plan on fixing it, do yourself a favor and have it rebuilt at a reputable shop, skip the headache we had with buying a transmission from the parts store.

Pray tell...I have one in an '01 Durango R/T. Hasn't been troublesome. Changed the fluid to Amsoil at 50K, plan do so again at 100K (92K now).
Anything else I can do to keep gremlins at bay?

They tend to start having issues around 125K on the norm, some will last longer, seems like alot more have issues before 100K, I had issues with mine, It just had a basic rebuild done to it before i bought it & was never right (lesson learned), thankfully i wasn't out the 1400.00, But come to find out it was converter related "lock-up" issues with mine, The tranny guy says this is where most of the problems come from especially when no codes are thrown, even causeing delayed shifts or erratic & even higher RPMs on the highway, Most tranny shops install a basic cheapo converter on these trannys & it is an "obsolute" no no, You need to install a top quality converter, a good 450-500.00 bucks, On the low side they cost around 1800.00 for a complete rebuild, on the high 2200.00, so if someone says they will do it for less, look out .

The noids in them are not a big issue, if they fail or act up, they will throw a code & store it, so if no codes are thrown, fluid/filter are good, bands are adj. & kickdown currected, you better look at the converter, The lock-up was an issue in them & can/will cause issues in any gear.

On my 96 ram it would really hang onto the gear it was in and wouldn't shift unless I completely let off the throttle and then it would shift, is this the same problem you are having? If it is, I replaced the governor pressure solenoid, the pressure transducer, and the lock up solenoid and this fixed the problem completely. I also changed the filter and fluid while I was at it. Pretty easy job, you don't even have to take the valve body off, cost me about $400 total.

First check the throttle pressure lever on the trans to make sure it isn't sticking from corrosion. The lever should return towards the front of the trans and there should be a return spring. If that is ok I would think you have a governor pressure transducer problem.

Bingo !! This is a problem many times with shifting problems. Not all the time of course but it needs to be checked closely. A scanner will give you pressure readings the transducer is sending. This trans still uses throttle pressure mechanically from the throttle pressure rod or cable so it needs to be checked and make sure it is free and working. If it is there is a good chance the Gov pressure solenoid and sensor need replacing. Without a scanner and pressure gauge to test you cant check it out right. But they are not real hard to replace. You have to drop the pan to replace the Gov solenoid and sensor so that way you can see if there is anything in the pan. If its clean you can replace the sol and sensor while in there as its a good chance it will fix it. But the only way to be sure is have it checked by a good tranny man. Ron

i replaced the solenoids two days ago..and have been driving it..so far...shifting is ok. Seems to have been the cure....so far anyways.
