Has anyone used the new FBO HR688 ignition system yet? http://4secondsflat.com/Ignition.html I was following FBO when they were developing their new non-ballast coil and when I decided to scrap my ballast, this new coil was not out yet so I bought a Mallory non-ballast coil instead. I have been running this Mallory coil since the Fall and I have been using my existing FBO A688 ECU module and it appears that this module was not designed for the non-ballast system. The existing ECU has been running fine but now I am wondering if it will burn up if I keep running it without a ballast, so I am checking to see if anyone has had any run time with this new unit. Thanks

I want to use my existing ECU/coil as a backup and this direct replacement would make it easier to replace parts if I am on the road. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have the original FBO setup on my Jensen, it's absolutely awesome so far. I went to buy another from Don but they aren't on his website anymore, just the new ballast-free setups.... If I can't buy the original I *might* try his new system.
Don.... WHERE ARE YOUUUUU?!?!?!

Don has been very helpful thru email getting my questions answered. My existing FBO ECU was one of the early units and mine has worked excellent, so this is why I am considering the new unit. Any members running this new system? Thanks

I was running a pertronix with the matching coil and no ballast. I just switched over to a Mopar electronic distributor and am running Accel's 300+ universal with rev control and matching coil. No ballast on this set-up either. I welded up and filed the advance slots to shorten up the mechanical advance, so I can run more initial. The car loves this set-up.
I believe Accel is the unit mentioned by FBO when you want to run multi-strike. I've run them before with no reliability issues. It packs alot of ignition power, is inexpensive and easy to install.
I keep a points dizzy and stock coil in the car for insurance.

I'm thinking on get one soon and still keep the ballast look, removing the resistor from the ceramic piece and installing a jumper ( wire or metallic piece ) inside the ceramic. Won't require any splice in that way and still keep the double ballast piece ( or single ) stock look

I see exactly same pins disposition and even the center screw provision on pics, just that they are not enclosured inside a "wall" like the stock ECU, but won't be noticeable with original rubber plug once mounted, since rubber plug covers everything

After having many discussions about this new ignition system with Don, I decided to buy the ECU and 12 volt coil. Since I am currently running his distributor and his old ECU, this should be a direct bolt in deal. I am still a little worried about the mismatch of ignition parts that I currently have so I opted for the new 12v non ballast parts.
Reference: This new unit puts out 24KV during "start" which should be very solid during hot restarts. The orange box only puts out 14-16KV during a start and Don said that this is a major factor in hot restart issues (non carb related). Even though I have not had any hot restart problems, my existing FBO unit still puts out 20-22KV, so the new unit will be a little bit stronger and it is designed for the 12v application.

I purchased the whole setup from Don and never could get it to work. After a bunch of headache i gave up put on pertronix unit and eliminated box, wiring, ect., just to find out that the coil from fbo was the problem the whole time. Box is good! I think i will just keep the pertronix now that it is installed and running strong. If anyone wants to buy the setup off me i will be willing to take offers

I was not 100% comfortable with the way that the distributor was going to be setup, so I just bought the ECU/coil and I am running them with my existing FBO distributor. So far the combo runs good. The only problem is that all of my A/F tuning that I have done this Summer has changed a little since all of my numbers are now lean after the new ECU/coil swap. But I think that I am back on track now after a few more carb tweaks.
