Hello everyone,

I got my brakes bled (front disc, rear drum) and I was out for a test drive. Coming down my street, I stepped on the pedal and heard a loud bang from the rear and then I had no brakes whatsoever. Fortunately, I was only going about 10 mph.

It turns out the back shoe (I guess it's called the secondary shoe) on the drivers side rear brakes actually came off its notch on the starwheel adjuster.

Does anyone know what caused this to happen? It's pretty unsettling, I don't need this happening to me on the street.

Thanks.

Greg

That only happens if it is not turned out enough. Basically the drums were not adjusted.
You either do not have self adjusting,(has a little cable that hits a bar that rides on the star wheel) or they were just way out.
Your brakes expand further than the starwheel can maintain contact and it falls out.
Should have had very soft brakes.

Did hold down spring break? Either that or perhaps the adjuster was not seated properly onto the shoe?

Guess I have seen a spring snap before, but that pushed out the wheel cylinder and dropped all sorts of things into the drum.

Thanks guys.

The pedal did seem softer than I would have liked. Nothing was broken, so I am going to assume they just weren't adjusted properly.

when you go back together spoon em out until they are locked solid then back them off accordingly.

That's how I adjust them. Back off the adjuster until there is a slight drag from the shoes when spinning the wheel.
