I'm looking at a Mega Block that's a pre-World Products casting. Anything I should be concerned about or watch out for? Plan is for a 3200 lb A-body strip/street pump gas 10.0 machine. It's a 4.5 siamese bore. How are they in a semi-street application? I live in southern Arizona where it gets pretty warm.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Robert Why do you want to go pre World?? I know they weigh about 35+lbs more but they have better cooling, stronger and much better oiling. I know more than a few people that took more than 50lbs off of them with out breaking a sweet if weight is an issue.
....there is nothing like driving my 1968 Hemi Dart around town and having people looking at you like you're nuts!!

Troy, the guy bought this several years ago and never used it. It's still in the crate and wrapped. It's not a bad price either.

I have had zero problems with the mega block in my Challenger. It cools fine but is a race only motor. Didn't have to do much to the block, no real hidden problems.

The block will be fine for what you are going to do. For added knock resistance and to pick up some power, consider a reverse flow water system. You can buy the plate from Indy, among others, and use a Small chevy water pump with it. This will push water through the heads first, which is what a motor really needs anyway.

If it were me I'd be careful of buying any Mega block without sonic checking it. The core boxes Galaxy used to cast them were never meant to produce the numbers they did and in the end it was a crap shoot with blocks due to core shift and cylinder pitting.
Most were fine and were great blocks, but there was enough bad ones to warrant throughly checking them out before buying.

I bought a pre world mega block... I had it sonic checked first... this was the 4.19 bore (showed great) then had it heat cycled per the Mopar engine book and then had the mains and cam bores done then started the bores and lifters bores done (bushed) ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif)

The Motor Castings blocks were much cleaner and more consistant all the way around, and as a (very) general rule they have much fewer issues to work through than the earlier ones.
Although Galaxy did cast some nice parts, their work always seemed more problematic and not as consistant. Most of the older problem child blocks you hear about, always seem to have come from Galaxy, and have been sitting around forever...
If I were going to buy an older megablock for a deal, I would hope to find an MC foundry mark on it first (meaning more recent), and second I'd still check it out very well before making the commitment
All, Thanks much for the all the info and advice.
Zippy, Can you tell me about what time frame the Galaxy units were produced and when did the MC change over occured? Also, is there a Galaxy casting mark to look for and where would it be located?
Here's a pic of it I got. Hard to make out the number but it looks like 2468830?

The one to look for is MC inside a little, kind of a sheild shape. I believe they were the nicest ones marketed under the MEGABLOCK banner, and they came in towards the end of that era.
Sorry, no pics handy to post, I've just been studying and memorizing as much as I can.
Dalton, only new ones (worth mentioning, but not part of this discussion )
Wish I knew the year of the change. It had already happened in mid '05 for sure. Beyond that??
I believe Dave V. (D100, 528) has one of the very last MC megas made. Took a long, long time to show up, over a year, and at the time they were rare as hens teeth. Glad those days are over.
Maybe Marc can remember Galaxy's markings, I have not seen one in a long time. It's easy to assume (!) they've all been used up by now, but that would be underestimating the hoarder faction* of the hobby.

Yep. Saved me a trip. Should be the letters MC inside that shield, funny triangle looking thing.
In that position I would take that as a good sign, and it is more than likely, very nicely cast. No promises but it is a positive thing to see.

Well, I took a chance and did get the block. It was one of those deals you just can't pass up. I finally took it to Brian at IMM and he checked it over. It sonic'd great, was at least .190 and Thrust was in the .240-.320 range with a 4.5" bore. It did have one main cap that had a problem, so it requires a line hone. Anyway, Brian's building a stout, durable, and streetable pump gas engine for my 67 'Cuda project. After reading here about all the fun on Drag Week, I put it on my bucket list, so that was the main set of parameters for this build. I still have a long way to go, maybe 2014? I am spectating this year and driving the route in a rental, so I hope to meet some of you. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beer.gif)

You are correct the little shield and MC are right below #4 exhaust port on my Hemi. During my wait for a block I spoke with the production engineer where they did the final machining for the castings. He was pulling his hair out, they'd get maybe 20 blocks and have orders for warrenty blocks, 4.50 wedge blocks, 4.50 hemi blocks, crate engines. Out of 20 maybe 3-4 would be good enough to be bored to 4.50". He said the harder they worked the further behind they got. Dave ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/Twocents.gif)
