I am using the engine from a 71 GTX for my project and had some questions about how these work, and would I be able to use these with an electronic ignition conversion. I have the FSM that shows how to adjust, but I don't understand how it functions. It seems that the carb solenoid is always energized when the ignition is on, does it ever de-energize? The dist solenoid is energized when the idle speed screw touches the plunger on the carb solenoid, how much retard is gained with this? Would this system function properly with an electronic ignition? Would it be worthwhile or should I just use the electronic ignition on its own? Thanks for any info. Mike

The carb solenoid is a bandaid to cure engine run on when the engine is turned off , it is not powered only when the ignition is shutoff. Yes they will work with electronic ignition but for a PROJECT that is NOT stock I'd lose it and the distributor solenoid also, you could sell those parts to someone doing a restoration $$

Thanks for the reply. What does the dist solenoid accomplish? I guess it retards the timing @ idle, but for what purpose, improved gas milage or better driveability? If the carb solenoid is removed, what changes as far as adjustment? Should I make a bracket to have something for the idle screw to rest on? Thanks again!

P.S. - What would those be worth? Complete single point dist. with solenoid and carb solenoid.

Both are often difficult to find parts, I'd reccomend that you save them with the car if you remove them.

That would be a good idea assuming he has the car the engine came from?

The project car is a 72 Satellite, and the complete drivetrain was removed from the GTX. I added an Air-grabber so I am keeping the carb & intake to work with it. I will have to modify the wiring for the electronic ign. so I was just wondering if it would be any benefit to swap the dist. solenoid in the process. What does the dist solenoid do for driveability/ mileage?

I don't know what it is there for, something to do with disabling the advance??? I don't think it's a mileage adding part, something to do with emission purpose??? I wouldn't waste time swapping it.
