Hello:

I'm confused.

Is a 71 340 orange or blue?

If the block cast date is 6-71, is it a 71 or a 72 engine?

Anyone have a pic of the correct air cleaner for a '71?

Allpar says: "1970-71 engines were painted orange; they changed to blue in 1972-73, although some late 1971 engines ended up blue also." Is 6-71 a "later" engine?

Thanks for any help!

Steve

I believe the change over to blue was in March or April of 71. That block would have been blue. You need to look on the block and find the assembly date. The block could have been cast quite awhile before it was assembled.

Thanks for the help!

Where would I find the assembly date on the block?

Is there a date range where it could be either a 71 or a 72?

Want to sell that intake and/or air cleaner!?

Thanks again

Steve

I have a 71 340 block that was cast in Feb 71 and it went into a 72 car - so I doubt that your motor was in a 72.

Check the VIN pad

for example my block has casting date of 7/70 was assembled 11/70 and did not go into the car till 4/2/71. since it was assembled 11/70 its orange but went into the car when most were getting blue engines. Not much set in stone with Chrysler!

That's interesting. Is yours a '70 spec or '71? Weren't they lower compression in '71, or maybe that was '72.

Do you mean its most likely mine went into a 72, rather than you doubt it went into a '72? Your block was cast earlier than mine.

I have a 71 block that is early 71 cast date with a 400000 series 71 VIN. Block is for sure Blue.

I've seen cars with 300000 VIN's and were still blue. One being a survivor car.

Thanks guys

Also curious, what do the first two digits on the VIN ID pad signify?

I've got one that's 0B, and one block that's 2B

Thanks,

Steve
