I am putting my car back on the street and I need to install a fan control that is automatic. What do you guys use? Summit brand,Painless,Hayden,Derale,Be Cool...
I want it on at 190 and off at 170 and am not sure weather the threaded sender is better or the bulb unit that fits into the radiator fins.
Thanks
Gus

I use a Spal controller to run my dual Spal fans and am very happy with it.

You can set it to any temp you want for turn on, low and high speed, off, etc.

Thanks OZ Summit sells one for a single fan that looks like a direct copy of the Spal unit I will stop by Summit tomorrow and compare them all.

As much as I like and use Summit... I got the Spal controller from Speedway...can't remember why though

I have it in the glove box...that is it on the right hand side.

I have an HHR fan that I will be using along with a belt drive stock type water pump.I did have a CV electric pump that worked well on the track and around town but not good on the hi-way.

adjustable is nice I suppose when you're trying to tune where you want it, but if you're going back to street driving, I imagine you'll be setting it and forgetting it.

all you need is a relay from the junk yard. for example, Dakota's have a relay on the inner fender for the Fog lights, if the truck has fogs.

then use a grounding sending unit to ground the control circuit of the relay. you can buy just the sending unit for around $30-40 and there are lots of options available. I have a 180 degree stat and found a sender that's 195 on, 185 off. Then I was really sly and wired it into a spare slot in the factory power distribution box on my Dakota, so that it looks factory and I don't have an extra relay bolted to the side of my inner fender.

I like the Derale #16759, it's adjustable and has a core temp probe.

Get a SPAL controller. I have been running one on my car for a few years with no problems. I use them on any car I set up with electric fans.

I as well run dual hd spals and mine came with painless relays.

Ive the 160 sending unit that goes in intake that kicks one fan on (clearly I could have both) and a toggle to run both.

On my Spal controller, I just used the factory LS1 sending unit to trigger it. Then just program it from there....I have the low speed for the first fan come on at around 185°, and full speed for it, and trigger for the second fan (second fan is relay controlled and not variable speed like the primary fan) to come on at 210°ish.
It also has an input for an a/c trigger...I used a trianary switch when I did the air con setup in the car and when turned on it kicks automatically kicks the second cooling fan on as well.

Gus you can see I use the stock waterpump and fan and then I also have an electric fan as a pusher. But I only use the electric fan if stuck in traffic on real hot days to keep it below 200 if it creeps up over 200 when stuck in traffic for a while. I just have my fan on a toggle switch that I switch on when I need it. And it is ign control so in case I forget to turn it off it will go off when I turn the key off. Ron
