Well, when I took this apart a couple years ago, I didn't think I'd be confused putting it back together, but I don't recognize this part and gasket from the Melling rebuild kit:

I think what you have in the picture is the relief valve plunger and the gasket for the relief valve plug. All of this goes in the top of the pump (the part that the oil filter screws on).

The spring is part of the relief too. It goes in the cover, not the hole as shown in your first pic.

The rotor looks dry..
Just a tip, make sure the rotor and chamber are prelubed before fireup...
As they can easily be scored...

Just my $0.02...

I'm not crazy... those parts were CLEAN and my wife was away at the grocery store at the time!
